Auction House sampling
Sampling Auction House evaluations

Continuing on a theme began Friday, today we are looking at the list of non-interchangeable currencies in DDO today.

The whole purpose is to point out what a ridiculously large group of non-interchangeable currency items exist in the game and encourage Turbine to give us an exchange method. I am suggesting that we be able to exchange them, all of them, for Astral Shards.

The list is really quite long. But in reality it is even longer than this, much longer: I was picky about the types of things I was willing to include. I limited the list to only those items with no intrinsic value or use other than the fact that they can be exchanged for other things.

  • I did not include standard collectibles. I suppose they represent a form of currency too, but they can each be exchanged for something that is (at least marginally) useful already and are useful in Cannith crafting
  • I did not include gems because they have an intrinsic value: they are intended to be exchanged for plat and that already works
  • I did not include items that combine into other currency items. So there are no Devil Scales but there are Essence of Ethereal, no Magefire Cannon Cores but there are Fortified or Mercurial Compounds
  • I did not include epic scrolls, shards or seals, but I should have; they meet my (rather arbitrary) definition

Enough talk. Time for the giant list.

I based the proposed exchange rate on a formula that included time to acquire, number acquired at a time, chance of acquisition, and drop rarity.

For instance, the Shavarath Signet Stone is highly valued even though there is no randomization or drop rate because you can only get one at a time, and it takes a very significant time investment.

I did not attempt to factor in market desirability. Our tastes are a fickle thing, whereas difficulty to obtain is fixed.

It would require someone knowledgeable, someone Turbine, to go through item-by-item and make adjustments. But my first glance through it looks like the formula held up decently: the most expensive items are indeed the hardest to acquire while the cheapest are pretty damn easy.

Are the most valuable currency items in the game really large horns, crystal disks or Cannith power cells? I don’t know, but I could make an argument for them. Besides, the point isn’t a discussion of relative value, it is that we ought to be able to exchange these bank-busters for something instead of hoarding them like tawdry reality show contestants.

What do you think?

  1. Well, OK, but to be truly “universal”, shouldn’t there be a way to trade the astral shards back into the other various items? I mean, sure, it’s great to get rid of a bunch of “no longer required” items, like a ton of adhesive slimes when you’re done doing your upgrading, but then what? If you now need more polished stones or brain samples, you will need to go farm them, probably collecting more adhesive slimes along the way. Perhaps a combination of being able to convert one-to-another, within the various groupings (like being able to exchange gold doubloons for silver and/or copper, and vice versa) as well as exchanging for astral shards. Otherwise, all we really have is a way to gain astral shards.

So really, you’re not advocating for a “universal” currency (‘cuz you can’t buy ‘everything’ with astral shards), but rather a conversion process for a a “common” currency (since the “common” currency cannot be used to exchange back into any of the other currencies).

Still, better than the current system, I think. But I’d really like to see an exchange process within the various currencies (especially for the gold doubloons) in addition to being able to exchange into the “common” currency. But maybe that’s just me.
    😉

  2. I am with you Comic but the complexity – and risk of exploitation – goes way up.

I can’t imagine the size of the barter table needed to allow us to trade any of these items for any other. Well over 10,000 possibilities. Which I why I suggested bartering for only one item.

You could in theory allow someone to barter for the universal currency and then use the universal currency to buy barter items – maybe at double the exchange rate? But you couldn’t use Astral Shards as the universal currency; or anything else that can be purchased with TP. It would be disastrous if people could buy Cormyrian Red Dragon Scale Armor with TP.

  3. Is the rate column the number of a single item to be made into a single astral shard?

DT runes (48/16/4) should probably be closer to a ratio of 54:18:5 currently it is at 12:4:1.
You can convert runes upwards at 9:3:1 but there are about 1.5 times as many sovereign runes as either eldrich or tempest runes the ratio is 23:24:33. My guess is that you will require all 1 type of rune to become astral shards but with the greater number of sovereign runes it is harder to get multiples of a single rune but farmers who wish to use this method will always make sovereign runes and will make many soverign runes at a time. That will gain them 1/3 more than using the lower tiered runes which I belive to be too generous and 1/5 being a better gain. I believe that 4 shards is about right for the value of sovereign runes and it probably would be almost impossible to get 16 of the same tempest rune in a reasonable amount of time giving me values of 43.2/14.4/4. We obviously can’t trade fractions of a rune and keeping the 3:1 ratio at the lower tier would give either 42/14/4 or 45/15/4. The 42/14/4 gives only 1/6 more and I find that too little. 45/15/4 gives 1/4 more and that feels about right.

If you could use different types of runes I think 6 sovereign would be good but given the limits of the current crafting interface which only allows 5 different items at once it would need to be 45:15:5. in that case I believe that you only should be able to use sovereign runes. It would be weird putting 5 stacks of 9 eldrich runes or 5 stacks of 3 tempest runes. I have not tested this but I think you can put multiple stacks of the same item into the device when you’ve split them into multiple inventory spaces (test at existing reaver’s refuge altars).

  4. “It would require someone knowledgeable, someone Turbine” – you realize this would require at least TWO people, right? *g*

But yeah, I like this concept. I have way too much stuff I’ll probably never use clogging up my ing bags. Some of it, such as signet stones, represents a considerable investment of time. Being able to trade some of that stuff in, even at a “loss,” for stuff I WILL use would be great. Also, it would be a good way to gauge the relative value of these things; if you just got some Golden Lions and don’t know if that’s a big deal or not, you could compare their astral shard value to see where they fall.

I’m also on board with this working in reverse – being able to use astral shards to buy ings. That might make this a little more feasible from Turbine’s perspective as it would be another means to promote the sale of astral shards, thus generating revenue that Turbine could spend on anything but fixing lag and bugs (well, they COULD spend it on that, but c’mon, you know they wouldn’t).
