Zoinks! A mystery!

Zoinks! There’s a mystery afoot! Quick everyone, split up and look for clues!

Truth be told, I have no love for Scooby Doo. Terrible animation, terrible quality, the exact same script every episode with only the name of the bad guy changing one from the next. It looked and felt like it was made for as little as possible to play for advertisers who cared as little as possible.

And don’t even get me started on Scrappy Doo. Worse than an Ewok.

But somehow it worked anyway. Because people love dogs? Because people have no taste? Because it was the only show with an obvious stoner character?

-shrug-

I will never get it, but then I don’t have to, it isn’t intended to be for me. Or at least it isn’t anymore.

But I digress. This is not about Scooby Doo, possibly the worst animated fare ever force-fed to America’s youth. No, this is about a mystery, and if there is one thing that Scooby Doo taught us, it is that the way to solve mysteries is to look for clues.

But wait, you may be asking, what mystery?

I’ll let the mystery woman explain herself, in her own words. Feel free to click any images you’d like to examine in closer detail:

Posing the mystery, part 1
Posing the mystery, part 2
Posing the mystery, part 3

So this is the Mystery. What is Malicia’s home plane?

Actually that last panel isn’t part of the mystery, but she’s got Bond Villain Disease and apparently has to tell us the plot before leaving us to die in some dastardly yet improbable way that we will inevitably escape.

Again.

So … what is Malicia’s home plane? Quick everyone, split up and look for clues.

Here’s one, from the end of the battle:

A final clue?

Is she from Shavarath? That can’t be, she specifically says she is not in panel 2. Hmmm. So this is not a clue. A red herring.

What else is there? Let’s look at Malicia herself, battling:

No, this is the final clue

Huh. Something about this looks clue-like.

Something.

Wait – what are those auras she is emitting? They are red, very fiendish, but they have a familiar shape …

Ah hah! Got it! As one who has been recently playing a Warlock, those are Warlock auras! Specifically:

Ah hah! Now we are getting somewhere

Both auras are core abilities from the Enlightened Spirit tree. One of them, Celestial Spirit, requires 18 levels of Warlock.

So Malicia is a Warlock. A fiendish one, no doubt, which would explain the fiendish hue. Most warlocks emit these auras in shades of gold, not red, but then, most warlocks are not succubi.

And … thinking about it further, Malicia is not just a warlock, but specifically, one who has built her character from the Enlightened Spirit tree. Meaning, she has the Fey pact. An unexpected choice for a devil! [Edit – astute reader FuzzyDuck8 points out that it may not be required to be Fey to also be Enlightened Spirit]

In fact, the Fey type in Eberron is not part of the plane of Shavarath at all. It is part of the plane of Thelanis, the Faerie Court!

Now that would be unexpected. A succubus, at least in form, from Thelanis? A Feywild Succubus?

Whoa!

Mystery solved?

What do you think?

  1. She was talking? Sorry, I was busy looking at her… assets….

    πŸ˜€

Seriously though, I loved that little peek at why she keeps coming back. In a recent guild discussion about how the random Rakshasa at the end of The Codex didn’t really fit with the storyline (unless it did and I missed reading something) I suggested it would have been much better if Malicia had been the one manipulating Arraetrikos et al.

And would also set us up for a great follow on story!

    • Everyone wants Malicia to be the ultimate recurring mastermind, hunting her down again and again until we find out which plane we can REALLY kill her on πŸ˜›

  2. All that means is she formed a pact with a powerful being from Thelanis, not that she is actually from there.

Personally, I’d wager that since we’ve ruled out Shavarath (in Wrath of the Flame), that she originates from Kythri, the Churning Chaos. That fits far better with a psycho half-dressed Bond villain succubus, in my opinion πŸ˜›

  3. How does enlightened spirit = fey tree? I’ve got a fiend pact enlightened spirit warlock…

Wiki page… http://eberron.wikia.com/wiki/Demon it says Succubi come from… Mabar, the Endless Night!

I think, considering the now increasingly likely it’s looking for that teased Mabar-appropriate stuff coming in Halloween to be Ravenloft (what with the current WotC stuff to be that, and there was ToEE previously), a land ruled by a master vampire, it’d make sense having some fairly strong links to the plane of endless night, even more when you take into account Strahd’s backstory https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strahd_von_Zarovich with the lost romance thing, as in the meantime, why not get it on with a lusty lady of the night?

  4. Maybe Malicia brings gnomes with her next time, suddenly things all make sense.

(As for Scooby Doo, it wasn’t just America’s youth that was subjected to it, generations of the world’s youth were!)

  5. I will get back to reading the article in a minute…but first things first…Scooby Doo is the greatest show on TV…Period. Although, I do agree with your sentiments about Scrappy.

  6. “Velma, you and Shaggy take Scooby and search that way, Daphne and I will go this way*…”

But if you think Scooby-Doo was the worst animated show ever put on, I think you need to re-think that one. I could come up with hundreds, er, um, dozens….I mean, several other examples of “worst – animated – show – ever”.

*Implied, but never stated or shown “and make-out.”

    • If you have read “The Dresden Files”, you would be aware of “hot, sexy, sedusing, evil” fairies.

      • Love that series, and James Marsters does a great job on the audiobooks. As for evil.. well, in those at least they’re not outright evil so much as “it’s complicated” πŸ™‚

  7. How DARE YOU! beseech the good name of Scooby Doo! This is my favorite cartoon of all time.. I can remember being a kid and just loving this every Saturday morning (Oh crap I just showed my age)

I’ll give you Scrappy Doo.. That was a mis-step for sure..

  8. That was a fun night.
She might be a fallen Eladrin making her home plane Lamania, which might explain her ties to the shroud’s end boss ‘Arry as that raid takes place in the vale of twilight which is an eberronian land with 2 planer rifts bleeding into it, also the only area (I know of) where Eladrin are not only a prominent fixture but also active combatants. What if “running with the devils” is more then just a reason to use a song title in an area with musical puns.

  9. Sitting with the Eberron Campaign Setting in front of me, I found that succubi are most commonly found in Mabar. However, as this is a sort of multiverse, it’s possible she could come from the Abyss or the Demonweb and made her way to Shavarath…

  10. I just double-looked at FuzzyDuck’s link, and it is referencing the home of various demons. Except, in DDO, and apparently only in DDO, succubi are devils. Certainly Malicia is a devil.

    The mystery deepens.

What do you think?
