Is that the new physics engine over there?

Turbine has been working on the main physics engine that powers our beloved DDO. Not sure what they are trying to get accomplished (lag reduction?) but some of that code has to be eight or nine years old by now.

I can tell you from personal experience that eight-year-old code will have been patched and tweaked so often that it becomes very difficult to apply new fixes. It may be easier to simply rewrite large chunks of the code. Meaning Turbine may not be adding anything new at all but simply trying to keep the place neat and tidy.

But I digress.

The Lamannia test server has been loaded with the upgraded physics engine. The QA lead, MajMalphunktion, has put out a call asking for help in testing the changes. He’s even willing to bribe us, offering 250 Turbine Points per day, although he does not detail how the points will be rewarded and it looks like winning a daily prize is kind of a long shot.

I did my part. If you are curious*, you can read the results of my Assassin testing here.

* And by “curious” I mean obsessed and possessing a superhuman attention span beyond the ken of mere mortals. Nothing in the world is less entertaining than bug reporting.

Bottom line, assassination seems to be in kind of a bad way. Doubly unfortunate, as Turbine is planning to saddle Halflings with Assassin as a racial prestige enhancement.

Oh well. Nice to see that they are still trying to get the kinks out, even if there are some unfortunate wrinkles in the process.

Head on over sometime and pitch in. You might even earn some TP for your troubles.

  4. In the past 2 weeks, I have logged on the the Lam server, and there has not been more than a total of 10 people on the entire server. Can’t really do much of a stress test of anything.
