Kobold Story Time

Papa Kobold telling long bedtime storiesSecret Entrance

The other day I was flying Coin around Reaver’s Refuge because I wanted to write about flying in DDO, and also because I can, and it is fun.

And indeed it was fun!

As I have done before, I explored while flying. The level designers who put Reaver’s Refuge together made it a wonderfully vertical collection of nooks and crannies; it invites you to wander about and see what you can discover.

So invited, I stumbled into an unfamiliar cave entrance.

Suddenly, Kobolds!

Safety Counts
Suddenly, Kobolds!

There is a full-size Kobold who is going through the story of Xendrick in great detail, and in particular the story of the Stormreaver and the Truthful One. This kobold has a ton of dialogue; I waited to see it all and it felt like it took ten minutes or more to complete.

There are also two baby Kobolds, one of which is asleep, and a teenager-sized Kobold that is not paying attention. It seems teenagers are the same regardless of species.

How long has this been here? I vaguely remember finding something long ago but could not find it again; I’d thought the legend speaker was somewhere on the ground level. Or maybe I hallucinated the entire memory.

Regardless, they are there now, in detail.

I wonder if I will ever stop being surprised by this game?

I hope not.

  1. I remember Lessah mentioning it on one of the earlier DDO Cocktail Hour episodes.. or maybe it was DDO Cast – I forget. But yeah, it’s been there a while. And yes, it’s great finding stuff like that :D

  2. On slow times I like to wander around the public areas to see what i can find, as NPCs will often have little bits of dialogue or hints of things to come, eg. the quori on the heads of the de Genev brothers in the marketplace (when the event is active) if you have trueseeing & a couple of drow arguing about turning away from Vulkoor to some new spider deity (iirc they appeared in the update before the lords of dust chain?) are ones i can think of off the top of my head.

  3. That’s actually pretty cool :)

  4. There are a lot of “the little things” that make this game so wonderful. Unfortunately most (myself included) are too busy streaking through to notice most of it.

Perhaps there is room for a “Flower Sniffer” segment on DDO Cast, where these types of things can be talked about.

    Great job Geoff :)
