DDO the Card Game: Monsters


This post is part of a continuing series where I present my ill-formed thoughts about a DDO-inspired card game to you for review and suggestion.


Monsters are slightly different from the other cards we’ve seen to-date in that they have up to three game texts.

If a monster is focused on one or more targets that are in Close Combat at the beginning of the monster phase, it performs a melee attack against those focus targets. If it has Melee text, it will perform a melee attack and then take the action described in the melee text. If it has a Zero in melee ability, it will only take the action described in melee text.

If a monster is focused on one or more targets that are At Range at the beginning of the monster phase, it performs a ranged attack against those focus targets. If it has Ranged text, it will perform a ranged attack and then take the action described in the ranged text. If it has a Zero in ranged ability, it will only take the action described in range text.

If a monster has focus targets in Close Combat and also At Range, it will ignore those At Range.

  1. Wow.. That’s pretty thorough. Do you have a mock-up of a single card (no art, obv) that might put it all together? From the sheets of statistics, it’s difficult to tell whether a ranger with two monk level ups and Arcane Archer would fare against, say, a kobold shaman. Arbitrarily speaking… Perhaps that could be the next installment…?

    Also, don’t tell the orthons about their 0 in ranged.. They might go a little trigger-happy with those repeaters bolted into the flesh of their arms 😛

  2. Just suggestions for monsters, but what about the Swampfang Kobolds? They attacked Gladewatch Outpost and they are commanded by a dragon. Again, just a suggestion…
