The Better Half

So… after a long time of not posting, I’m back. I’m taking a page from Geoff and writing about some of the other D&D CRPG’s out there. I have to admit that I’ve been only been dropping in on DDO occasionally lately. Seems like my game playing goes in cycles. My latest MMO fun has been a rotation between DDO, Marvel Heroes, and Star Trek Online. On the the traditional single player side though, I am rediscovering one of the classics of computer gaming — the old AD&D gold box series.

This may be a record — I’m actually posting on consecutive days! I took my first look at the just release to open beta of the new Neverwinter MMO made by Cryptic Studios and released by Perfect World. My character to test with you ask? A halfling control wizard named Merri Thrushmage was my choice. I always have loved halflings (maybe because I’m a little short myself?), and my first love in the AD&D world was the mage. Character creation was pretty simple. For a control wizard your primary attribute is Intelligence, and your secondary attributes are Wisdom and Charisma. This is a little different from DDO where a mage that specialized in crowd control would max Intelligence and give Constitution a healthy boost. No explanation was really given as to why WIS and CHA were secondary attributes although is sort of makes sense. Rolling of attributes was a little misleading — I attempted to get an 18 in INT and at least a 16 in WIS and CHA and was unable to do so after many rolls. Every time an 18 showed up in the INT slot I had a 13 in WIS and a 15 in INT (at least I think those were the numbers — I’ll have to test again). It seems that their random number generator is not so random. Other than class choice and attribute rolling the only choices I had to make were related to what I looked like physically. A wide range of faces and facial features was available, but only 3 basic body types (think skinny, medium, and stocky). No height adjustments were available.

The Better Half

With the demise of MyDDO blogging I have taken Geoff up on his incredibly gracious offer to host our blogging on his site. While I’m not an incredibly prolific poster, occasionally I manage to get a few words recorded in the electronic ether. Who am I you ask? The best way to describe me is that I am a father (10 kids actually), sometimes musician,  gamer guy, lover and husband of Sprytehart, follower of the Way (the Romans called us Christians), and IT geek although not necessarily in that order.

I happen to be afflicted with a peculiar disease called “completionism”. This strange malady makes me want to try everything in almost any game I play. I love to explore every nook and cranny of every city, dungeon, and wilderness area. I love to gather information about every facet of the game (or at least know where to go to find it!). DDO being no exception I have amassed a large list of characters on all the servers except Wayfinder, each either following a different PrE line or being some experiment in multiclassing or maybe and experiment in a way to play the game (ask me about my undead only quester). The one particularly bad side effect of this style of playing is that I really have no high level characters at all. On the positive side though I do have a lot to look forward to!

Hopefully in the coming weeks I hope to post some of my journey through this completionist world of mine. I might even come across a few tidbits of information that you’ve forgotten about or never encountered before. Or I may just be boring… <grin>

More later…
